Description
Character Portrait of Captain William Kidd
Captain William Kidd was a notorious figure in the world of privateering and piracy during the late 17th century. Born in Scotland around 1654, Kidd began his career as a privateer, commissioned by various European governments to attack and plunder enemy vessels.
William Kidd's path took a darker turn when he turned to piracy. Best known for his ill-fated attempt to find a treasure-laden ship known as the Quedagh Merchant.
Though he initially intended to target French vessels, Kidd captured the Quedagh Merchant, which turned out to be an Armenian ship sailing under French passes. This event marked a turning point in his life as he went from being a privateer to a pirate in the eyes of the British authorities.
In 1699, he was finally captured and sent to England for trial.
Found guilty of piracy and the murder of one of his crew members, Kidd was sentenced to death.
He was hanged in London in 1701, and his body was left to hang in a gibbet on the Thames River as a warning to others.
