Virginia Woolf in A Room of one's Own wrote " I venture to guess that anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman."
In the male dominated publishing industry women were often forced to publish under pseudonyms and anon.
Female writers were taken less seriously than their male counterparts and thought their work was less acceptable in a world of gender inequality and sexism.
Charlotte Bronte was told "Literature cannot be the business of a woman's life " by the poet laureate Robert Southey, she went on to publish under the name of Currer Bell, her sisters followed adopting male names.
After Jane Eyre was published the sisters revealed their true identity.

The world of Literature is richer because these and other women despite the odds went on to publish and touch hearts around the world.
